Angelo State University Professor to Hold Signing for New Book Friday

SAN ANGELO – Dr. Rebecca Bernard of the Angelo State University English faculty has published her first book of short stories, “Our Sister Who Will Not Die,” through Mad Creek Books, an imprint of the Ohio State University Press.

According to information from ASU Monday, each of the 11 short stories in Bernard’s book brings readers face to face with the frailties of human character – and demonstrates how the yearning for love and connection allows beauty and resilience to emerge from darkness. In questioning traditional formulations of good and evil, Bernard’s stories ask readers to recognize their own culpabilities and acknowledge their shared humanity. They also compel readers to believe that hope is always worth letting in.

“Our Sister Who Will Not Die” won the 2021 Non/Fiction Prize from The Journal, a literary magazine published by Ohio State University. It is available for purchase through Ohio State University Press, Barnes and Noble, Amazon and other online booksellers.

Bernard will also host a reading and book-signing event for her new book on Friday, Sept. 23, at 6 pm at Old Town Books, 506 S. Chadbourne St. in downtown San Angelo.

Now in her second year on the ASU faculty, Bernard is an assistant professor of English in the Department of English and Modern Languages. In addition to her book, she has published more than 25 fiction and nonfiction stories in a wide variety of literary journals. She is assistant fiction editor for The Boiler literary journal, and she previously served in editorial positions with the American Literary Review and Nashville Review.

Bernard also previously taught at Jefferson Community and Technical College in Kentucky, Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana, Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and the University of North Texas. She holds a Ph.D. in creative writing from UNT.

More details and samples of Bernard’s work are available on her website at rebeccaibernard.com.
