Dominic Thiem asked whether Carlos Alcaraz can beat the records of the Big Three

2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem suggested that predicting tennis future is unfavorable when asked if Carlos Alcaraz would break all the Grand Slam records. Alcaraz, 19, became a Grand Slam champion after winning this past US Open.

Now, some feel Alcaraz could potentially reach the Grand Slam heights of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. “Five years ago also, nobody knew that he’s coming up. So nobody knows which players are here in five years,” Thiem said during a Q&A session for the Rennes Challenger.

Thiem reached his first two Grand Slam finals at the French Open, but his first and only Grand Slam title came at the US Open two years ago.

The Rennes Challenger asked Thiem whether he would love to play on clay all year round. “False. I love clay, obviously. I grew up on it, but I would have never won a Masters or a Grand Slam if it would be ‘play all year long on clay,’ Thiem answered.

Thiem fell just short of winning Rennes

Last week, Thiem was just one win away from winning his first title since the 2020 US Open. In the Rennes final, Thiem stood no chance against Ugo Humbert as the Frenchman thrashed the Austrian 6-3 6-0.

“I am not happy with my performance yesterday, but it was a good week. It feels great that my shots get back their old strength. Now it’s time to get more solid and used to playing long and intense matches back to back,” Thiem wrote on Twitter.

“Congrats, @HumbertUgo, for an excellent week – you are a great player! I enjoyed the week here in Rennes. It’s a lovely city! See you all in Metz.” Thiem, who is now the 182nd-ranked player in the world, is still searching for his top form after returning to tennis in late March.
